Growing in Patience

Back to all sermons The Fruit of the Spirit

Date: December 2, 2018

Speaker: Jay O'Brien

Series: The Fruit of the Spirit

Scripture: James 5:7–5:11

What impatience leads to:

  • Missing out on precious fruit

  • Kudgmental grumbling

  • Dishonoring pain and longings

Jeremiah 9:23,24 “Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

Moments of great calm,

Kneeling before an altar

Of wood in a stone church

In summer, waiting for the God

….For the message.

                        Prompt me, God;

But not yet. When I speak,

Though it be you who speak

Through me, something is lost.

The meaning is in the waiting.

- R.S. Thomas, Kneeling

Meaning in the Waiting

  • We learn about the patience of God

  • We learn about presence and love

"The message is simple: When you come to one of the many moments in life when you must give an account, provide a ledger of what you have been and done, and meant to the world,... do not, I pray, discount that you filled a dying man’s days with a sated joy, a joy unknown to me in all my prior years, a joy that does not hunger for more and more, but rests satisfied. In this time, right now, that is an enormous thing." - Paul Kalinithi

  • We learn about where we can place our hope

Hebrews 6:12,19,20 "so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.... We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf.
