Jesus and the Law

Back to all sermons Exodus

Date: July 15, 2018

Speaker: Jay O'Brien

Series: Exodus

Scripture: Exodus 19:1–19:6, Matthew 5:17–5:20

Entrance

  • The Law requires faith in God's deliverance
  • Jesus requires faith in His deliverance

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. - Matthew 5:3-5

Kingdom

  • The Law establishes the Israelite Kingdom - a light to the nations
  • Jesus establishes the Kingdom of God - a light to the nations

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 5:14-16

Love

  • The Law emphasizes the central ethic of love
  • Jesus emphasizes the central ethic of love
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. - Matthew 5:13
