Replacing God

Back to all sermons God And Our Fears

Date: July 30, 2017

Speaker: Jay O'Brien

Series: God And Our Fears

Scripture: Judges 8:22–8:31

How We Replace God

  • We replace God with people who embody "greatness"

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. - Phillipians 2:5-8

  • We replace God by making people dependent on ourselves
  • We replace God when we settle for superficial spiritual acts

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.- Matthew 23:27-28

Why God is Irreplaceable

  • God alone is the full embodiment of true greatness
  • God alone invites us to live in light of grace

We need to remember that the antidote to exhaustion isn’t rest. It’s wholeheartedness. A life of unity and union. A life undivided. Much has happened in your life and mine to cause dividedness. There is much in our churches and workplaces, in our politics and our family lives, which cause division Sometimes it seems that division and fragmentation may have the last word. But wherever you find yourself right now, the call is to wake up….To wake up to your fundamental unity and wholeness. To wake up to God’s deepest Spirit-life within you, waiting to burst forth and to become your steady, strong, and stable center. - Chuck DeGroat, Wholeheartedness

  • God alone brings personal wholeness
